'To Die In Italbar' NPCs for Amber Diceless Roleplay

Happy August, everyone!  This post continues a series about using characters from Roger Zelazny's other fiction as NPCs for Amber Diceless.  In previous posts I've discussed using characters from Zelazny's Dilvish the Damned stories, characters from his novel Eye of Cat, the modern-day human sorcerers from his short story Mana From Heaven, and Kalifriki of the Thread, hero of two Zelazny short stories.  I had great success using these characters in a campaign, which I describe in more detail in the post about Dilvish.

Today I'd like to present a group of NPCs from one of my favorite Zelazny novels, 1973's "To Die In Italbar."  This novel is a sequel of sorts to "Isle of the Dead" (1969), and the Francis Sandow character from both novels also appears in the Zelazny novella "This Moment of the Storm" (1966) and his short story "Dismal Light" (1983).

In my campaign, Sandow was assigned to a player character as a "shadow ally," and player characters were subject to being possessed by Pei'an deities (with all of the advantages and disadvantages which this entails).

GOOD STUFF [2 Points]

Francis Sandow was a space colonist who spent years of spaceflight in suspended animation.  When he awoke in the 27th century he instantly became the oldest living human being, although he was still young physically and mentally.  Desperate to find a way to fit in, Sandow sought out the last surviving members of a dying alien race, the Pei'ans, who adopted him and taught him the Pei'an arts of telepathy and 'worldscaping,' or advanced terraforming.  After Sandow had mastered these arts, the Pei'ans allowed him to participate in a Stranti religious ceremony known as the 'Rite of Naming.'  During this ritual, the impossible happened: the Pei'an god Shimbo adopted Francis Sandow as its human avatar.  Shimbo is a storm-god, the Pei'an lord of thunderbolts, who periodically possesses Sandow's body to help the human whenever he is in danger or desperate need.  Sandow rarely remembers much after being possessed by the Pei'an deity, but after the Pei'an race became extinct he went on to become a master human terraformer (and the wealthiest person in all of recorded human history) under Shimbo's ever-watchful protection.

John Morwin               [20 Points]

Shind, Captain Malacar's Telepathic Lizard  [40 Points]
     * Shadow Trail [1 Point]
     * Able to Speak in Tongues and Voices [4 Points]
     * "Exalted" Psychic and Telepathic Mastery [16 Points]

     * Invulnerable to all Conventional Weapons [4 Points]
     * Deadly Damage Autoguns [4 Points]
     * Rocket Velocity [16 Points]
     * Able to Speak [1 Point]

GOOD STUFF [1 Point]

John Morwin served aboard Captain Malacar's ship as chief telepath until the war between the human homeworld and its colonies, which only ended with the extermination of all life on planet earth.  When Captain Malacar vowed revenge and launched a one-man terrorist war against the human colonies, the two parted company until the threat posed by the mysterious 'H' brought them back together again.  When Captain Malacar was killed in the confrontation with 'H,' Morwin assumed command of The Perseus and took Jackara on as his first mate.

Shind is a powerful telepathic lizard which once belonged to Captain Malacar and has now bonded with John Morwin.  The Dream-Globe Manufacturing Device is a sort of focus for those few humans with hints of psychic ability, amplifying and concentrating their mental powers.

Doctor Larmon Pels (deceased)               [5 Points]
PSYCHE [Human Rank]
STRENGTH [Human Rank]
ENDURANCE [Chaos Rank]
WARFARE [Human Rank]

Deceased [14 Points]

Implanted Life Support System [55 Points]
     * Animal Vitality [1 Point]
          - Implant Quality On Owner [10 Points]

     * Resistance to Normal Weapons [1 Point]
          - Implant Quality On Owner [10 Points]
     * Regeneration [4 Points]
          - Implant Power On Owner [15 Points]

The B. Coli, Laboratory Ship [21 Points]
     * Invulnerable to All Conventional Weapons [4 Points]
     * Rocket Velocity [16 Points]
     * Able to Speak [1 Point]

Dr. Pels is a brilliant pathologist who managed to stop all of his own biological processes at the precise moment of his death, allowing him to continue his work in a sort of medically-induced undead state.  When a Pei'an avatar of disease began spreading plagues throughout the outer human colonies through its human host 'H,' Dr. Pels hoped that its pathogens might hold some sort of breakthrough cure for his own medical condition, which brought him into conflict with Captain Malacar (who hoped to weaponize these pathogens and use them against the human colony worlds).  After the Pei'an deity Shimbo, acting through its own host, Francis Sandow, took action to end the threat posed by 'H,' Dr. Pels remained on friendly terms with John Morwin and Jackara.

Jackara               [0 Points]
PSYCHE [Human Rank]
STRENGTH [Chaos Rank]
ENDURANCE [Chaos Rank]
WARFARE [Chaos Rank]

Kooryab Herd [28 Points]
     * Double Speed [2 Points]
     * Amber Stamina [2 Points]
     * Combat Training [1 Point]
     * Extra Hard Teeth [1 Point]
     * Rapid Regeneration [8 Points]
     * Named and Numbered [*2 Points]

Laser Rifles [16 Points]
     * Destructive Damage [8 Points]
     * Named and Numbered [*2 Points]

Unregistered Laser Pistol [8 Points]a
     * Destructive Damage [8 Points]

Band of DYNAB Sympathizers [2 Points]
     * Combat Training [1 Point]
     * Named and Numbered [*2 Points]

GOOD STUFF [1 Point]

As an impoverished orphan on a distant human colony world, Jackara was forced into prostitution as a teen-- but she survived this humiliation and rose above her degrading start in life. After falling in with the terrorist Captain Malacar in an attempt to build a biological superweapon, she fell in love with John Morwin and the two now travel together in Malacar's infamous cruiser, The Perseus.  She keeps a herd of Kooryab, eight-legged riding lizards from her home colony, in the Perseus' hold, and she has stocked the Perseus' armory with military-grade laser rifles.  She has also maintained ties with a band of DYNAB militia members who were sympathetic to Captain Malacar's terrorist campaign.

Avatar of Mya-o-arym, the Blue Woman               [140-point construct]
     * Pei'an Pantheon Shadows [3 Points]
          - Personal Shadows [1 Point]
          - Countless Quantity [*3 Points]
     * Avatar Implant Manifestation [135 Points]
          - Able to Alter Shadow Reality [8 Points]
               ~ Limited to Matters of Disease and Recovery [-4 Points]
               ~ Implant Power [15 Points]
          - Primal Damage Disease-Casting [16 Points]
               ~ Implant Quality [10 Points]
          - Flux-Pin Connection [*3 Points]
     * Power-Based Psyche [2 Points]

This is the Pei'an deity of disease and healing which possessed 'H' in To Die in Italbar.  Once a player had brought Francis Sandow into the game as their shadow ally (as described here), this construct is an example of something which I might introduce to the game to oppose them. Possession of the Blue Woman as an unclaimed construct might even be something that characters could come into conflict over, in much the same way that Zelazny's characters fought over possession of the Keep of the Four Worlds construct.

Avatar of Belion, Shaker of Worlds               [140-point construct]
     * Pei'an Pantheon Shadows [3 Points]
          - Personal Shadows [1 Point]
          - Countless Quantity [*3 Points]
     * Avatar Implant Manifestation [135 Points]
          - Able to Alter Shadow Reality [8 Points]
               ~ Limited to Geological Phenomena - Volcanoes and Earthquakes [-4 Points]
               ~ Implant Power [15 Points]
          - Primal Damage Earthquakes and Magma Attacks [16 Points]
               ~ Implant Quality [10 Points]
          - Flux-Pin Connection [*3 Points]
     * Power-Based Psyche [2 Points]

Belion, the Pei'an deity of earthquakes and volcanoes, is Francis Sandow's antagonist in Isle of the Dead.  I've presented this construct as another example of power which could be "up for grabs" in the campaign once player characters have introduced Sandow as their ally.

Avatar of Desme, the Watcher In-Between               [140-point construct]
     * Pei'an Pantheon Shadows [3 Points]
          - Personal Shadows [1 Point]
          - Countless Quantity [*3 Points]
     * Avatar Implant Manifestation [135 Points]
          - Able to Alter Shadow Reality [8 Points]
               ~ Limited to Psychic Phenomena - Telepathy, Clairvoyance, etc. [-4 Points]
               ~ Implant Power [15 Points]
          - Primal Damage Brain Blasts [16 Points]
               ~ Implant Quality [10 Points]
          - Flux-Pin Connection [*3 Points]
     * Power-Based Psyche [2 Points]

A Pei'an deity of my own creation, presented as another example of the mischief that a GM can introduce in a campaign by taking this approach to characters from Zelazny's other books.

Avatar of Kamba, Keeper of the Contrarian Word               [140-point construct]
     * Pei'an Pantheon Shadows [3 Points]
          - Personal Shadows [1 Point]
          - Countless Quantity [*3 Points]
     * Avatar Implant Manifestation [135 Points]
          - Able to Alter Shadow Reality [8 Points]
               ~ Limited to Manifestations of Anger, Conflict, and Violence [-4 Points]
               ~ Implant Power [15 Points]
          - Primal Damage Battlefield Mayhem [16 Points]
               ~ Implant Quality [10 Points]
          - Flux-Pin Connection [*3 Points]
     * Power-Based Psyche [2 Points]

Another Pei'an deity of my own design.

Avatar of Kavana, Mother of Brightness               [140-point construct]
     * Pei'an Pantheon Shadows [3 Points]
          - Personal Shadows [1 Point]
          - Countless Quantity [*3 Points]
     * Avatar Implant Manifestation [135 Points]
          - Able to Alter Shadow Reality [8 Points]
               ~ Limited to Manifestations of Light and Brightness [-4 Points]
               ~ Implant Power [15 Points]
          - Primal Damage Laser-Intensity Light and Heat [16 Points]
               ~ Implant Quality [10 Points]
          - Flux-Pin Connection [*3 Points]
     * Power-Based Psyche [2 Points]

Yet another of my creations.
